The American Red Cross in Skagit Valley and Whatcom County began as individual chapters in 1917.  Initiated by the first World War, the Chapters continued to serve the men, women, and children of our community by responding to current needs for emergency care. In World War I we provided surgery dressings, clothing, civilian relief, nursing care, and financial aid for those affected by the war. During the Great Depression, they helped feed families in need. In 1941, the Gray Ladies (Nurses’ Aid) Corp was developed when World War II was declared, with volunteers assisting in local hospitals, air raid shelters, clinics, and caring for the sick in their homes.  These two chapters were merged into today's Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross in March, 2004

Support for the American Red Cross grew during this dramatic time in our country’s history, with thousands of volunteers contributing clothing, dressings, linens, and monetary funds. The Junior American Red Cross also begun in 1917, was then at its apex with 100% of all county schools becoming supporting members.

Today, the focus of our work is again reflected by the needs of the families, of the neighborhoods, and of the collective individuals and organizations that live and work in Whatcom County and Skagit Valley. We now provide Disaster Relief, Health & Safety Education, Armed Forces Emergency Services & International Social Services, and Volunteer & Youth Recruitment and Training.
